It is believed that a man-eating wild monster "Nian" with a large mouth, capable of swallowing several people in a single bite appeared in a country village and he attacked over villagers to terrify them. An old wise man passed through the village and told an villagers a secret to scare Nian away!
People kept their houses dark but only few were having light. The moment Nian approached the house, people started deafening noise of firecrackers sounded endlessly. The monster got scared and went away from there. Since then people light firecrackers whenever the dragon-look monster comes along with red color decorations to scare the beast. This Story of Chinese New Year is based on old people sayings. There is no gaurantee of its genuinity.
